Danielle's summer experience
Today I got up earlier than I usually do, as this morning I’m going to meet up with my friends and Yannick, our TE youth worker, at the Natatorium swimming centre for a morning of activities in the pool. I’m really looking forward to it because the weather is already so hot! I can’t forget anything: my bathing suit, towel, water bottle, sunscreen and, of course, my lunch.
After enjoying the pool, we’re going to have a picnic by the water. Yannick said he would try to find a place in the shade so we won’t “burn our tootsies off” (he has such a funny way of putting things!).
In the afternoon, we have a sword fight with Andrew near the volleyball court next to the Natatorium. I can’t wait to try out the sword I made yesterday during art time. It was raining, so we stayed in the TE art room to make what we needed for today’s activity.
At 3:00 p.m., our sword fight ends and we’re allowed to take our swords home. I can’t wait to show it to my parents and little brother. He’ll be so jealous!
Tonight, I have to go to bed early because tomorrow is Friday and it’s our special outing! We are leaving from TE at 9:00 a.m. for La Ronde. We’re getting there by metro. This is the first time I’m taking the metro without my parents. I’m a little nervous, but I know Mélissa and Maxime will make sure we’re safe. My dad says this experience will be good for me so that I can get used to using the metro by myself when I’m older.
I like going to activities on my own. My parents leave for work in the morning, and I meet my group at the scheduled time and place. At the end of the day, I go home and spend the evening with my parents. Sometimes TE organizes activities in the evening. I like to get there on my own. My parents say I’m developing my independence. I call it freedom!
TE has organized a cooperative entrepreneurial project since 2018. The goal is to introduce young people aged 12 to 17 to the world of entrepreneurship through their first work experience. All youths in the group have to develop a concept or product and sell it, and they are the ones responsible for planning and implementing the project. They split tasks among different committees (human resources, finance, marketing, production, etc.) based on their interests and personal development goals.
The camp helped my two boys develop their independence. This was the first time they managed on their own in the neighbourhood, and I think it was good for them. The variety of activities offered was also a plus. We also really liked the flexibility of the new format.
The activities were so cool. I had the best summer vacation ever.
… it enhances your self-confidence, sense of initiative, and responsibility.
TE staff are very kind and understanding about our ideas and opinions.
